What is Web conferencing?

Web based conferencing refers to innovative technologies that allow people to communicate or “conference” over the Internet. Web conferencing infrastructures is made up of hardware, software and service components.

Web conferencing uses the Internet as the vehicle to bring audio,video, and collaborative conferencing solutions to users through their PCs, and by using traditional or wireless phone lines.

The terms outlined below are often heard in today’s office lexicon and describe the two main types of Web conferencing solutions.

Webinar – This type of Web conference involves presenting content over the Internet using a slide show presentation and a traditional telephone line. Users view the presentation by logging in to an online Web conference, downloading files such as the slide show presentation, and communicating with the moderator either via a telephone or through a Web-based chat option. The moderator can interact with participants, view registrant lists, and manage communications during the Web seminar.

Webcasting – A Webcast is similar to a Webinar with the addition of using streaming video and/or audio over the Internet. Streaming is a method for transferring data continuously; it allows a user to display the data via a browser before all the file data has downloaded. For streaming to work, the data must be received by a browser and sent to an application that will process the data and convert it to audio or video.
